Arvo Pärt 90

Large Lutheran Church 20.30
Tickets
The work of world-renowned Estonian composer Arvo Pärt is one of the most distinctive phenomena in contemporary music.

In contrast to the avant-garde experiments of the second half of the 20th century, Pärt turned his focus back to humanity, faith, and simplicity. He embodied these values in a return to tonality and tradition—from Gregorian chant to the sound of church bells—through his own compositional technique known as tintinnabuli. Pärt’s minimalist music is always oriented toward spirituality, meditation, and a sense of timelessness. It draws us into introspection and offers space for inner stillness. This year, Arvo Pärt celebrates his 90th birthday, which we will commemorate with a special concert dedicated to his vocal works, performed by the outstanding Estonian ensemble Vox Clamantis. Led by Jaan-Eik Tulve, the ensemble specializes in both Gregorian chant and contemporary music, and has received numerous prestigious awards for its recordings (ECM Records, Mirare), including a Grammy (for the album Arvo Pärt: Adam’s Lament), Diapason d’Or, Choc de Classica, and a nomination for the BBC Music Magazine Award. Vox Clamantis can also be heard on the soundtrack of Paolo Sorrentino’s Oscar-winning film The Great Beauty (La grande bellezza). In addition to Arvo Pärt’s vocal music, the concert will feature two choral works by American post-minimalist composer David Lang (Pulitzer Prize for Music, Grammy). Like Pärt’s music, these compositions are marked by spiritual themes and the simplicity of minimalist expression.

Our concert program is dedicated to the jubilee year of our dear friend, composer Arvo Pärt. We will perform works spanning several decades, including a kind of revival— a vocal version of Silouan’s Song, originally written for string orchestra in 1991. In addition to pieces by Arvo Pärt, we will also perform Gregorian chant, one of the key creative sources for his music, as well as works by American composer David Lang, for whom Arvo Pärt was a great creative role model.“ Jaan-Eik Tulve & Vox Clamantis
