Avi Avital – Between Worlds: Italy

Záverečný koncert 21. ročníka festivalu Viva Musica! bude oslavou rozmanitosti, farieb a hudobných chutí. Virtuózny mandolinista Avi Avital pricestuje do Bratislavy so svojím súborom Between Worlds, ktorý založil v roku 2023 s cieľom hľadať a objavovať presahy klasickej, ľudovej a tradičnej hudby z rôznych regiónov sveta. Jedným z ich prvých projektov je program Italy venovaný talianskej hudbe prevažne z južnej časti Apeninského polostrova a vplyvom, ktoré ju formovali v historickom aj súčasnom kontexte. „Teším sa, že sa opäť vrátim do Bratislavy a že budem môcť vystúpiť pred publikom, ktoré má v mojom srdci výnimočné miesto — tentokrát s mojím najambicióznejším projektom, aký som doteraz vytvoril. Between Worlds spája pestrú zmes hudobných jazykov a tradícií, prepletenú emóciami a energiou – je to skutočne elektrizujúci zážitok,“ uviedol Avi Avital. Exkluzívnym hosťom koncertu bude vynikajúca talianska speváčka world music Alessia Tondo. „Som nesmierne hrdá na to, že môžem stáť na pódiu spoločne s výnimočným súborom pod vedením úžasného maestra, Aviho Avitala. Pokúsim sa priniesť so sebou všetko teplo tradičnej hudby z môjho rodného južného Talianska, zo srdca Stredozemného mora. Bude to výnimočný koncert plný energie,“ doplnila Alessia.

Rozmanitosť vnemov, nuáns a vplyvov, ktoré formovali kultúry na Apeninskom polostrove, je obrovská, a jeho folklór je bohatý a nezabudnuteľný. Súbor Between Worlds sa tentoraz vydáva na juh Talianska, aby preskúmal jeho hudobné tradície a ich historický aj súčasný význam – od ľudovej hudby cez neapolský barok až po súčasnosť. K súboru sa pridáva speváčka Alessia Tondo, významná predstaviteľka tradičnej hudby a rodáčka z regiónu Apúlia. V programe zaznie divoký tanec tarantella, ktorý sa v ľudovej predstavivosti spája s následkami uhryznutia jedovatým pavúkom, ako aj varianty pizzicy, ľudového tanca zo Salenta, najjužnejšieho cípu Apúlie. V špeciálne upravených aranžmánoch tradičných gréckych piesní preskúmame starodávne väzby medzi Gréckom a juhom Talianska, ktoré sa dodnes zachovali v hovorenom griko dialekte. V diele Viaggio in Italia (Cesta po Taliansku) prináša sicílsky skladateľ Giovanni Sollima eklektickú skladbu, ktorá prechádza od stredovekej hudby až po progresívny rock a vzdáva hold ikonickým osobnostiam talianskeho umenia, literatúry a hudby. Spojovacím prvkom celého programu je Avitalova mandolína – nástroj, ktorý je synonymom talianskeho folklóru a ktorý sa v jeho rukách stáva koncertným nástrojom schopným vyjadriť každý žáner hudby a zohráva v tomto programe osobitnú úlohu.

Avi Avital je prvým mandolinistom v histórii, ktorý bol nominovaný na cenu Grammy v kategórii klasickej hudby. Pre jeho „explozívne charizmatické“ vystupovanie (New York Times) a výnimočnú virtuozitu ho prirovnávajú k Andrésovi Segoviovi a Jaschovi Heifetzovi. Už viac ako dve desaťročia je vášnivým popularizátorom mandolíny, pričom tento nástroj predstavuje na prestížnych pódiách sveta, formujúc tak jeho históriu aj budúcnosť v žánri klasickej hudby. Okrem toho zásadne rozšíril repertoár pre mandolínu – nielen transkripciami existujúcich diel, ale aj objednávkami viac než 100 nových skladieb, vrátane koncertov od skladateľov ako Jennifer Higdon, Anna Clyne, Avner Dorman či Giovanni Sollima. K vrcholom jeho sezóny 2024/2025 patria sólové vystúpenia s Minnesota Orchestra, Colorado Symphony, Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, Freiburg Barockorchester, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Venice Baroque Orchestra a súborom Il Pomo d’Oro. Na recitáloch a komorných koncertoch vystúpi s Mauriceom Stegerom a Sebastianom Wienandom, Ksenijou Sidorovou, Omerom Kleinom a ansámblom Brooklyn Rider. Opakovane účinkoval v Cadogan Hall a Wigmore Hall v Londýne, v Berlínskej filharmónii, v Alte Oper vo Frankfurte, v Aula Magna Sapienza v Ríme, v Amici della Musica vo Florencii, v Auditorio Nacional v Madride, v City Hall v Hongkongu, v Orchestra Hall v Minnesote a v Herbst Theatre v San Franciscu. V roku 2023 Avi Avital založil súbor Between Worlds, ktorý debutoval trojdielnym rezidenčným pobytom v Sále Pierra Bouleza v Berlíne a následne koncertoval v Bukurešti, Varšave, Hamburgu, Ludwigshafene a Antverpách. BWE skúma spojenia klasickej, ľudovej a tradičnej hudby z rôznych regiónov a vo svojich prvých projektoch sa zaoberal hudbou z Pyrenejského polostrova, oblasti Čierneho mora a južného Talianska. Avitalova umelecká všestrannosť mu priniesla rezidenčné pobyty a ocenenia ako „Portrait Artist“ na festivale Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, v BOZAR v Bruseli, v Konzerthause Dortmund, ako aj post rezidenčného umelca na Bodensee Festival a La Jolla Music Society v Kalifornii. Pravidelne účinkuje na veľkých festivaloch ako Aspen, Salzburg, Hollywood Bowl, Tanglewood, Ravenna, MISA Shanghai, Cheltenham, Verbier, Lucerne, Bad Kissingen, Rheingau Musik Festival, Gstaad a Tsinandali. Ako exkluzívny umelec Deutsche Grammophon vydal svoj v poradí siedmy album Concertos v spolupráci s Il Giardino Armonico a Giovannim Antoninim (Vivaldi, Hummel, Bach, Barbella, Paisiello), za ktorý v roku 2024 získal ocenenie Opus Klassik. Jeho predchádzajúce albumy The Art of the Mandolin (2020), Bach (2019), Avital Meets Avital (2017), Vivaldi (2015), Between Worlds (2014) a Bach (2012) boli rovnako vysoko hodnotené kritikmi a získali mnohé ocenenia. Avi Avital sa narodil v Be’er Sheve na juhu Izraela. Na mandolíne začal hrať ako osemročný a čoskoro sa pridal k miestnemu mládežníckemu mandolínovému orchestru, ktorý viedol jeho prvý učiteľ, rusko-izraelský huslista Simcha Nathanson. Študoval na Hudobnej akadémii v Jeruzaleme a na Konzervatóriu Cesare Polliniho v Padove pod vedením Uga Orlandiho. Hrá na mandolíne, ktorú vyrobil izraelský husliar Arik Kerman.

Alessia Tondo patrí k najvýraznejším hlasom apulskej hudobnej scény. Začínala v útlom detstve v skupine Mera Menhir, ktorú viedla jej stará mama. Jej talent objavila skupina Sud Sound System a už v trinástich rokoch sa stala sólovou speváčkou Orchestra della Notte della Taranta, kde vystupovala s významnými umelcami ako Mauro Pagani, Goran Bregović, Giovanni Sollima, Phil Manzanera, Carmen Consoli a Raphael Gualazzi. Spolupracovala tiež s Talianskym ľudovým orchestrom Ambrogia Sparagnu, skupinou Radiodervish, Michelem Lobaccarom, Ludovicom Einaudim (pre ktorého napísala text k slávnej skladbe Nuvole Bianche) a Admirom Shkurtajom. Je zároveň členkou medzinárodne úspešného súboru Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino. V roku 2023 debutovala na koncerte s Avim Avitalom v Pierre Boulez Saal v Berlíne ako členka Between Worlds Ensemble. V roku 2025 predstavila nový projekt Sentieri spolu s Giovannim Sollimom a Avim Avitalom, s ktorým začiatkom roka absolvovali turné po Taliansku. Jej prvý sólový album Sita získal v roku 2021 cenu Loano Award za Najlepší album umelca do 35 rokov a umiestnil sa v Top Ten World Music Album v hodnotení Il Giornale della Musica. V albume Sita Alessia Tondo predstavuje svoju osobitú víziu tradičnej hudby prostredníctvom pôvodných piesní, ktoré sama napísala. Využitím originálnych vokálnych línií a balád, spievaných výhradne v salentskom dialekte, autenticky približuje svoje korene a identitu.

Súbor Between Worlds založil a vedie mandolínový virtuóz Avi Avital s cieľom stierať hranice medzi klasickou a tradičnou hudbou. Každý projekt sa zaoberá iným geografickým regiónom – Pyrenejským polostrovom, juhom Talianska, Čiernym morom a inými – a vytvára živý hudobný portrét daného územia plný farieb a jemných nuáns. Diela klasických skladateľov z jednotlivých regiónov sa uvádzajú popri tradičnej hudbe, ktorá často ovplyvnila ich vznik, a to v spolupráci s renomovanými folklórnymi spevákmi a inštrumentalistami ako hosťami. Between Worlds tvorí desať medzinárodných hudobníkov, ktorých rôznorodé zázemie, výnimočná univerzálnosť a zvedavosť im umožňujú prekračovať hranice klasickej hudby a ponoriť sa do rytmov a textúr folklórnych tradícií. V tvorivej spolupráci so svojimi hosťami súbor vyzdvihuje autenticitu folklórnych umelcov ako živé dedičstvo dávnych umeleckých foriem. Prostredníctvom klasických skladieb, originálnych aranžmánov a tradičnej interpretácie spoločne nanovo formulujú špecifický hudobný dialekt jednotlivých regiónov, zároveň však otvárajú ich hranice, sledujú ich vplyvy a oslavujú ich plynulosť a otvorenosť. Výsledkom je oslava hudobnej rozmanitosti: starého aj nového, klasického aj tradičného, lokálneho aj univerzálneho. Publikum si môže vychutnať krásu hudby, objavovať skryté zákutia, nachádzať jemné súvislosti a nanovo si predstaviť náš spoločný pocit domova vo svete.

The final concert of the 21st Viva Musica! festival will be a celebration of diversity, colors, and musical flavors. Virtuoso mandolinist Avi Avital will arrive in Bratislava with his ensemble Between Worlds, which he founded in 2023 with the aim of exploring and discovering the intersections of classical, folk, and traditional music from different regions of the world. One of their first projects is the program Italy, dedicated to music from Italy — primarily from the southern part of the Apennine Peninsula — and the influences that have shaped it in both historical and contemporary contexts. “I’m thrilled to return to Bratislava and perform for an audience that holds a special place in my heart — this time with the most ambitious project I’ve created to date. Between Worlds brings together a rich mixture of musical languages and traditions, woven with emotion and energy — a truly electrifying experience,” said Avi Avital. The concert’s special guest will be the outstanding Italian world music singer Alessia Tondo. “I’m so proud of this opportunity to share this prestigious stage with a very special ensemble directed by amazing Maestro Avi Avital. I will try to bring with me all the warmth belonging to the popular music of my land in south of Italy, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. It will be a very special concert full of energy,” added Alessia.

The range of sensibilities, nuances, and influences that have shaped the cultures of the Apennine Peninsula is vast, and its folklore is rich and unforgettable. The Between Worlds ensemble turns to southern Italy to explore its musical traditions and their historical and contemporary significance—from traditional folk, through Neapolitan Baroque, to the present day. Guest singer Alessia Tondo, a leading figure in folk music and a native of the Apulia region, joins the Ensemble. The program includes the spirited Tarantella, famously associated with the aftermath of a venomous spider’s bite, as well as variants of the Pizzica, a folk dance from Salento at the southern tip of Apulia. In curated arrangements of traditional Greek songs, the program also explores the ancient connections between Greece and southern Italy, still echoed today in the spoken Griko dialect. In his Viaggio in Italia (Journey in Italy), Sicilian composer Giovanni Sollima offers an eclectic composition that journeys from medieval sounds to progressive rock, paying homage to iconic figures of Italian art, literature, and music. Throughout it all, the connecting thread is Avital’s mandolin—an instrument synonymous with Italian folklore that, in his hands, becomes a classical concert instrument capable of expressing every genre of music and playing a special role in this program.

From her childhood performing with the Mera Menhir group, led by her grandmother, to international acclaim with Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, Alessia Tondo has emerged as one of the most significant voices on the Apulian music scene. In 2023, Alessia made her concert debut with Avi Avital at the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin as part of the Between Worlds Ensemble. Mandolin virtuoso Avi Avital leads a new ensemble that challenges the boundaries between classical and folk music. Each project of the Between Worlds Ensemble is dedicated to a different geographical region—the Iberian Peninsula, southern Italy, the Black Sea, and more to come—and paints a vivid musical portrait of that region, rich in colors and intricate nuances. Classical composers from each region are presented alongside the traditional music that often inspired their work, performed together with renowned folk vocalists and instrumentalists as guest artists. The Between Worlds Ensemble consists of ten international musicians whose diverse backgrounds, remarkable versatility, and boundless curiosity allow them to venture beyond the familiar classical sphere into the rhythms and textures of folk traditions. In creative collaboration with their guest artists, the Ensemble highlights the compelling presence of folk performers as living legacies of ancient art forms.
