Jess Gillam Ensemble
Stala sa najmladšou sólistkou, ktorá kedy vystúpila na prestížnom koncerte Last Night of the Proms. Pravidelne koncertuje na najvýznamnejších svetových pódiách a medzinárodná kritika oceňuje najmä jej prirodzenú virtuozitu, elektrizujúci prejav a neobmedzenú výrazovosť. Saxofonistka Jess Gillam je zároveň moderátorkou vlastnej relácie This Classical Life na BBC Radio 3, kde je najmladšou moderátorkou v histórii tejto rozhlasovej stanice. Ako zanietená propagátorka saxofónového repertoáru v rámci klasickej hudby pravidelne uvádza premiéry diel súčasných autorov. Medzi nimi napríklad Glasslands od Anny Clyne, ktoré uviedla s viacerými telesami ako Festival Orchestra of the Lincoln Center, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales a Royal Scottish National Orchestra. V auguste 2024 vystúpila na vypredanom koncerte v rámci BBC Proms so skladbou Stravaganza Karla Jenkinsa a vo februári 2025 uviedla vo svetovej premiére so Štokholmskou kráľovskou filharmóniou nové dielo britskej skladateľky Dani Howard Saxophone Concerto. Jess Gillam je rezidenčnou umelkyňou Royal Albert Hall a umeleckou partnerkou orchestra Manchester Camerata. Ako sólistka účinkovala s orchestrami: BBC Symphony Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Gothenburg Symphony, Iceland Symphony, Lahti Symphony, London Symphony, NDR Elbphilharmonie, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra či Houston Symphony. Vystúpila v najprestížnejších koncertných sálach sveta ako Carnegie Hall v New Yorku, Wigmore Hall v Londýne, Concertgebouw v Amsterdame, Konzerthaus vo Viedni, Konserthuset v Štokholme, Palau de la Música v Barcelone, ale aj na festivaloch Kissinger Sommer, Schleswig-Holstein, Heidelberger Frühling, Mozartfest Augsburg, Latitude Festival, Aspen Music Festival či Boston Celebrity Series.
V roku 2019 založila svoj súbor Jess Gillam Ensemble, aby mohla spolupracovať so stálym kolektívom hudobných priateľov a spájať členov publika prostredníctvom hudby. Osemčlenný súbor v obsadení saxofón, klavír, sláčikové a bicie nástroje pristupuje k hudbe otvorene a odvážne.
Jej relácia This Classical Life na BBC Radio 3 pokračuje už piatu sezónu a získala si uznanie médií. The Guardian o nej napísal: „Mnohí etablovaní moderátori nedosahujú Gillamovej srdečnosť a pôsobivú schopnosť osloviť publikum.“ V roku 2020 získala relácia ocenenie ARIA Award za najlepší špecializovaný hudobný program. Jej debutový album Rise bol periodikom The Times zaradený medzi 100 najlepších albumov roka 2019. Druhý album TIME (2020) si takisto vyslúžil veľké uznanie kritiky.

Jess Gillam, a saxophone star of the new generation, is one of the most outstanding talents on today’s music scene. She was the first saxophonist in history to reach the finals of the prestigious BBC Young Musician competition and became the youngest soloist ever to perform at the Last Night of the BBC Proms. Alongside her international concert career, she is also active as a radio and television presenter—she hosts her own show This Classical Life on BBC Radio 3, which aims to make classical music more accessible to a wider audience. The program earned her an ARIA Award for Best Music Programme. Jess Gillam is currently a resident artist at the Royal Albert Hall and the first saxophonist in history to sign an exclusive recording contract with the prestigious label Decca Classics. In 2021, she was awarded an M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for her services to music. As an ambassador for projects like BBC Proms, BBC Young Musician, and a patron of several music foundations, she is actively engaged in working with young musicians. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with leading orchestras such as the NDR Radiophilharmonie, Munich Philharmonic, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Iceland Symphony Orchestra, and the Minnesota Orchestra. She is also deeply involved in chamber music through her own group, the Jess Gillam Ensemble, with which she offers a fresh and stylistically diverse perspective on classical music in dialogue with contemporary and popular genres. It is with this ensemble that Jess Gillam will perform for the Bratislava audience.
„I am very excited to come and perform in Slovakia for the first time and I’m really looking forward to meeting the audiences. I’ll be bringing my ensemble to the wonderful Viva Musica! festival for a night showcasing the saxophone in all its glory with music by CPE Bach to James Blake, and Nadia Boulanger to Michael Nyman, and we can’t wait to welcome you into an energetic and diverse evening.“ Jess Gillam
Jess Gillam is celebrated as a leading figure in the saxophone world. With her electrifying performances, vibrant stage presence, and magnetic personality, the ‘uniquely mercurial’ (The Times) Jess Gillam has been invited to perform on the world’s major stages since becoming the youngest ever soloist to perform at the Last Night of the Proms. She was hailed for her ‘effortless virtuosity and limitless expressiveness’ (Arts Desk). Equally at home behind the microphone, Gillam has shattered glass ceilings as the youngest-ever presenter for BBC Radio 3 with her award-winning weekly show, This Classical Life. Passionate about broadening the saxophone repertoire, Jess Gillam gives premieres of various works in the current season. These include Glasslands by Anna Clyne with the Festival Orchestra of the Lincoln Center, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Further premieres include the world premiere of Dani Howard’s Saxophone Concerto with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in February 2025 and the London premiere of Karl Jenkins’s Stravaganza in a sold-out BBC Proms performance in August 2024. Gillam continues to be Associate Artist of the Royal Albert Hall and Artistic Partner with the Manchester Camerata. Highlights of Gillam’s concerto appearances include performances with the BBC, DSO Berlin, Gothenburg, Iceland, Lahti, London, NDR Elbphilharmonie, and Sydney Symphony Orchestras, as well as the London, Royal Liverpool, and Munich Philharmonics, among others. Further afield, concerto highlights in the US include performances with the Houston Symphony and Minnesota Orchestra. On the recital stage, Jess Gillam has performed across Europe, the US, and beyond. As an ECHO Rising Star in the 2022/23 season, Gillam has appeared in Europe’s most prestigious concert halls, including Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Wiener Konzerthaus, Konzerthuset Stockholm, and Barcelona’s Palau de la Musica. She has also performed at the Kissinger Sommer, Schleswig-Holstein, and Heidelberger Frühling music festivals. Following her Carnegie Hall debut in the 2022/23 season and recitals at the Aspen Music Festival and Boston Celebrity Series, she returns to the US this season, making her debut in the closing concert of the Princeton University Concerts series and the Schubert Club International Artist series in Minnesota.
Jess Gillam loves to collaborate and bring people together through energetic performances. She formed her band, the Jess Gillam Ensemble, in 2019. Their bold, uplifting, and open-minded approach is rooted in classical music but draws inspiration from various musical worlds. Gillam’s carefully curated programmes offer a fresh take on C.P.E. Bach, groove in the music of John Harle, Anna Meredith, and Barbara Thompson, as well as folk influences and soaring melodies through works by Sakamoto, J. S. Bach, and Björk. Since its inception, the ensemble released their chart-topping album TIME and has performed throughout the UK and Europe to largely sold-out audiences at venues and festivals, including Wigmore Hall, Latitude Festival, Mozartfest Augsburg, and Bath Festival.
Alongside her performance work, Gillam is a keen TV and Radio presenter. Her weekly show on BBC Radio 3, This Classical Life, is in its fifth season and has garnered high praise from The Guardian, which wrote, „There are many more established presenters who lack Gillam’s warmth and impressive ability.“ In 2020, This Classical Life won the ARIA Award for Best Specialist Music Show. As a guest presenter, Gillam has worked for BBC Radio 2, co-hosted on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme, and presented at the BBC Proms and BBC Young Musician of the Year. As an exclusive recording artist with Decca Classics, Jess Gillam is the first and only saxophonist to be signed to the major label. Both her albums have reached No. 1 in the UK Classical Music Charts, and her debut album, Rise, was listed in The Times’ Top 100 albums of 2019. Her second album, TIME, was released to critical acclaim in 2020. Gramophone wrote: „Gillam’s agile soprano saxophone soars impressively… before gliding gracefully in and around a hive of textural activity that builds up to a frenetic ending“ in her recording of Michael Nyman’s Where the Bee Dances. In 2016, Jess Gillam made history by becoming the first saxophonist to reach the finals of BBC Young Musician of the Year. She has received a Classic BRIT Award, been nominated for The Times Breakthrough Award, and was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list of 2021 for Services to Music. Returning to her roots in Ulverston, Cumbria, Gillam continues to promote her own concert series in her hometown, which she founded at age 12, inviting internationally renowned artists. She is a patron of Young Sounds UK, Music in Secondary Schools Trust, the London Music Fund, and is a member of the Council of the Royal Philharmonic Society. Gillam is a Vandoren UK Artist and became the youngest-ever endorsee for Yanagisawa Saxophones at just 13 years old.
