Najznámejšia „anti-opera“ druhej polovice 20. storočia a dielo označované za manifest hudobného minimalizmu zaznie v Bratislave v exkluzívnej slovenskej premiére pri príležitosti 50. výročia svojho vzniku. Viva Musica! festival uvedie koncertnú verziu opery Einstein on the Beach (Einstein na pláži) v podaní dvoch špičkových belgických súborov Ictus a Collegium Vocale Gent so Suzanne Vega v úlohe rozprávačky.

Philip Glass v opere Einstein on the Beach zásadne predefinoval tradičnú predstavu o opernom žánri. Namiesto klasického príbehu ponúka dielo voľné asociácie okolo postavy Alberta Einsteina, odkazujúce na jeho úvahy o čase, priestore a teórii relativity. Premiéra sa uskutočnila v roku 1976 v Avignone v réžii legendárneho Roberta Wilsona s choreografiou Lucindy Childs a Andyho de Groata a zaznamenala obrovský úspech.

Slovenská premiéra diela na festivale Viva Musica! sa uskutoční výnimočne už v máji – vo štvrtok 28. mája 2026 o 19:00 v bratislavskej Starej tržnici. Viac než trojhodinová koncertná verzia s divadelnými prvkami a vizuálnou zložkou zaznie pod vedením dirigenta Toma De Cocka a umožní zažiť sviežosť i radikálnosť raného Glassovho minimalizmu. „Päťdesiat rokov po premiére je Einstein on the Beach stále rovnako aktuálny, krehký a zvláštny ako pri svojom vzniku. Partitúra ponúka všetky možnosti – môže znieť barokovo, jazzovo, dokonca ako techno,“ uviedli členovia belgického súboru Ictus, ktorý sa špecializuje na uvádzanie súčasnej a experimentálnej hudby. Zborové party opery naštudoval súbor Collegium Vocale Gent, ktorý v roku 1970 založil dirigent Philippe Herreweghe a dnes patrí medzi najvýznamnejšie a najoceňovanejšie vokálne telesá na svete.

V úlohe rozprávačky sa predstaví legendárna americká folk-rocková speváčka Suzanne Vega. „Je to veľmi lákavé, ten pocit, čo príde ďalej. Aj ten najmenší posun je udalosťou. Ak sa basová linka zmení čo i len o jednu notu, je cítiť, ako sa celé dielo posúva,“ hovorí Suzanne Vega, ktorú s Philipom Glassom spája aj autorstvo textov k dvom piesňam z jeho cyklu Songs from Liquid Days. Glass, naopak, rozpísal party pre sláčikové kvarteto v jej piesni Fifty-Fifty Chance z albumu Days of Open Hand.

Opera Einstein on the Beach bude uvedená bez prestávky, v súlade s pôvodným konceptom diela. Diváci budú môcť počas koncertu voľne prichádzať a odchádzať, čím sa zachová otvorený, plynúci charakter tejto výnimočnej kompozície.

Suzanne Vega sa stala jednou z vedúcich osobností obnoveného záujmu o folkovú hudbu na začiatku 80. rokov, keď v kluboch Greenwich Village sprevádzala sama seba na akustickej gitare a interpretovala vlastné piesne označované ako contemporary alebo neo folk. Od vydania svojho debutového albumu Suzanne Vega v roku 1985 vystupovala na vypredaných koncertoch po celom svete. Jej prejav, bez vonkajšej teatrálnosti, býva často opisovaný ako „chladný, suchý šepot s jemnou drsnosťou brúsneho papiera“ či „naliehavý, no odzbrojujúco silný“. Jej piesne nesú rukopis majstrovskej rozprávačky, ktorá „pozoruje svet prenikavo poetickým pohľadom“. Skladby Suzanne Vega sa často sústreďujú na mestský život, obyčajných ľudí a témy každodennej reality. Jej texty sú úsporné a nenápadné, často intelektuálne, no zároveň civilné a autentické, pričom ponúkajú viacero možných interpretácií. Tvorba Suzanne Vega je okamžite rozpoznateľná – jedinečná, premyslená a rovnako pôsobivá i dnes.

Ictus je súbor súčasnej hudby so sídlom v Bruseli, ktorý vznikol v roku 1994 popri tanečnom zoskupení Rosas. V období, keď sa hudobné súbory vnímali najmä ako komorné orchestre zložené z virtuóznych sólistov, sa Ictus postupne vyprofiloval ako kolektív tvorivých hudobníkov venujúcich sa experimentálnej hudbe v najširšom zmysle slova – od komponovanej hudby, cez sound art, improvizáciu až po elektronickú hudbu. Ictus združuje približne tridsať členov v rozptyle troch generácií. Súbor pravidelne spolupracuje s kurátormi, choreografmi a významnými hudobnými telesami, akými sú Brussels Philharmonic či Collegium Vocale Gent, pričom zároveň rozvíja vlastné projekty v rozmanitých formátoch. Ich tvorba je dostupná na YouTube kanáli aj v rozsiahlych online archívoch obsahujúcich takmer 300 zdokumentovaných projektov. Ictus zároveň vedie program nadstavbového magisterského štúdia pre mladých hudobníkov v spolupráci so School of Arts Gent.

Collegium Vocale Gent vznikol v roku 1970 z iniciatívy dirigenta Philippa Herrewegha. Súbor patril medzi prvé telesá, ktoré vo vokálnej hudbe uplatnili nové poznatky o interpretácii barokovej hudby. Ich autentický prístup založený na dôraze na text a rétoriku priniesol ansámblu transparentný zvuk, vďaka ktorému si získal svetové renomé a vystupoval v najvýznamnejších koncertných sieňach a hudobných festivaloch v Európe, Spojených štátoch, Južnej Amerike, Japonsku, Hongkongu či Austrálii. Od roku 2017 súbor organizuje v Toskánsku vlastný letný festival Collegium Vocale Crete Senesi.

The most famous “anti-opera” of the second half of the 20th century and a work widely regarded as a manifesto of musical minimalism will be presented in Bratislava in its Slovak premiere to mark the 50th anniversary of its creation. The Viva Musica! festival will present a concert version of Philip Glass’s Einstein on the Beach, performed by two outstanding Belgian ensembles – Ictus and Collegium Vocale Gent – with Suzanne Vega appearing as narrator.

In Einstein, Philip Glass fundamentally redefined the traditional concept of opera. Instead of a conventional narrative, the work offers a series of free associations revolving around the figure of Albert Einstein, referencing his reflections on time, space and the theory of relativity. The opera was premiered in 1976 in Avignon in a production directed by the legendary Robert Wilson with choreography by Lucinda Childs and Andy de Groat and achieved enormous success.

The Slovak premiere of the work at the Viva Musica! festival will take place exceptionally early in the season – on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at Old Market Hall in Bratislava. The more than three-hour concert version, featuring theatrical elements and visual components, will be performed under the direction of conductor Tom De Cock and will allow audiences to experience both the freshness and the radicalism of early Glass minimalism. “Fifty years after its premiere, Einstein on the Beach remains just as relevant, fragile and strange as it was at the moment of its creation. The score offers endless possibilities – it can sound baroque, jazzy, even like techno”, said members of the Belgian ensemble Ictus, which specializes in the performance of contemporary and experimental music. The choral parts of the opera have been prepared by Collegium Vocale Gent, founded in 1970 by conductor Philippe Herreweghe and today considered one of the world’s most distinguished and acclaimed vocal ensembles.

The role of narrator will be performed by the legendary American folk-rock singer Suzanne Vega. “It’s very tantalizing, this feeling of what’s coming next. Even the smallest shift is an event. If the bassline changes even a note, you feel the whole piece shift”, says Suzanne Vega. This will not be her first encounter with Glass’s music: Vega wrote the lyrics for two songs in his cycle Songs from Liquid Days, while Glass arranged the string quartet parts for her song Fifty-Fifty Chance from the album Days of Open Hand.

Einstein on the Beach will be performed without an intermission, in accordance with the original concept of the work. Audience members will be free to enter and leave the hall during the performance, preserving the open and fluid character of this extraordinary composition.

Suzanne Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s when, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, she sang what have been labelled contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Since the release of her self-titled, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album, she has given sold-out concerts in many of the world’s best-known halls. In performances devoid of outward drama that nevertheless convey deep emotion, Vega sings in a distinctive, clear vibrato-less voice that has been described as “a cool, dry sandpaper- brushed near-whisper” and as “plaintive but disarmingly powerful.” Bearing the stamp of a masterful storyteller who “observed the world with a clinically poetic eye,” Suzanne’s songs have always tended to focus on city life, ordinary people and real-world subjects. Notably succinct and understated, often cerebral but also streetwise, her lyrics invite multiple interpretations. In short, Suzanne Vega’s work is immediately recognizable, as utterly distinct and thoughtful, and as creative and musical now as it was when her voice was first heard on the radio over 20 years ago.

Ictus is a contemporary music ensemble based in Brussels, born in 1994 as the live band for Rosas dance company. Founded at a time when ensembles were considered mini orchestras made up of virtuoso soloists, Ictus emerges today as a collective of creative musicians dedicated to experimental music in its broadest sense: written music, sound art, improvisation and electronics. Ictus is an artist-driven structure consisting of some 30 people spread over three generations. It has become a regular partner of numerous curators, choreographers and large-scale groups, such as Brussels Philharmonic and Collegium Vocale Gent, while developing its own projects in a variety of formats. Its work is available on a YouTube channel as well as a rich web archive, with almost 300 documented projects. Ictus is conducting an advanced master’s programme for young musicians with the School of Arts Gent.

Collegium Vocale Gent was founded in 1970 on Philippe Herreweghe’s initiative by a group of friends studying at the University of Ghent. They were one of the first ensembles to use new ideas about baroque performance practice in vocal music. Their authentic, text-oriented and rhetorical approach gave the ensemble the transparent sound with which it would acquire world fame and perform at the major concert venues and music festivals of Europe, the United States, Russia, South America, Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. Since 2017 the ensemble runs its own summer festival Collegium Vocale Crete Senesi in Tuscany, Italy.
